TSB to stop mortgage lending to professional sports players - including footballers
TSB has announced it will stop offering residential mortgages to employed and self-employed professional sportspeople.
From next week the bank will pull out of lending to sporting professionals including footballers, rugby players, boxers and golfers.
Aaron Strutt, product director at Trinity Financial, says: “Even though TSB will not lend to sporting professionals, there are still a host of banks and building societies happy to provide these borrowers with mortgages.
“Sportspeople are more likely to qualify for a mortgage when they have a good deposit and a plan in place to ensure they continue earning when they retire. Lenders will ask a range of questions about their employment record and the length of their existing contract. They will want to know about income sustainability to cover potential injuries and details about any sponsorship packages.”
A TSB spokesman told The Times that sports players make up a small part of its lending and they are not customers the bank can support.
