A London man has become the first person to be sent to prison after pleading guilty to the new squatting law. He has been sentenced to 12 weeks in prison after being found in a property in Pimlico without the owner's permission. The Evening Standard reported that the arrest came after Metropolitan police officers were called to a housing association flat the day after the new anti-squatting law came into effect. The Government estimates that up to 4,200 squatters could be prosecuted each year. Once convicted, the maximum sentence is six months in prison and a £5,000 fine. September 28, 2012
