The gap between house prices in the North and the South of England reached a new high in quarter three rising above £100,000 for the first time, according to the Nationwide Building Society.

The average price of a home in the UK has now hit £172,127 and this means that the typical property price in the South of England is now 74% above its Northern equivalent.

UK house prices increased by 0.9% in September and were 5% higher than September 2012. The Southern regions of England, especially London, continue to record strongest rates of house price growth.
