Expats Mortgages - many overseas borrowers struggling to secure mortgages

Many British expats living and working abroad are struggling to find mortgages in the wake of Lloyds Banking Group's withdrawal from the expat mortgage market.

There are over four million British expats living and working abroad and we regularly receive enquiries from potential borrowers located all over the world. Over the last week we have spoken to people in South Africa, China and Kenya all looking to buy a property in the UK.

Aaron Strutt, a broker at Trinity Financial, says: “In our experience, expatriates are often paid in foreign currencies or in share options or even through deferred bonuses.

“We have access to a wide range of contacts at the banks with more niche acceptance criteria. One large high street lender will accept applications from expats and there are a couple of international banks happy to lend.”
