Erick Pickles would like to turn the UK into a 'nation of self-builders'
Britain should be turned into a 'nation of self-builders' by offering subsidies and tax breaks to people who build their own homes, the Communities and Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles has said.
Mr Pickles suggests that the UK should be more like countries including Austria, Belgium and Sweden by rewarding people who choose to build their own property.
There are approximately 7,000 self-build projects planned this year, although this number could rise substantially if more of the banks and building societies offered self-build mortgages.
Aaron Strutt, product manager at Trinity Financial, says: "Many of the lenders quietly pulled out of the self-build market citing a lack of demand. We have access to a few lenders offering self-build rates, including BM Solutions and Leeds Building Society, but there isn't must choice in the market at the moment."
