Housing Minister Mark Prisk has announced a £9.5 million fund to help 62 councils combat social housing fraud. The plan is to locate council tenants who are letting out their properties and benefiting from the rent.  Councils will use special investigation teams and advanced data-matching methods to track down people breaking the rules. The Prevention of Social Housing Fraud Act 2013 with come into force this summer and perpetrators could face a fine and a custodial sentence of two years. Previously, anyone found to be breaching the rules would face little more action than losing their tenancy. April 5, 2013
