25 years of buy-to-let mortgages
The buy-to-let market has just passed its 25th anniversary of the inception of buy-to-let mortgages. In 1996, the Association of Residential Landlords worked with a small group of lenders to develop a mortgage product specifically tailored to landlords.
The private rental sector has a reported 13 million private renters in the UK market, and according to Savills it was worth £1.338 trillion in July 2021, including non-mortgaged properties to let.
The portion of homes in the sector classed as ‘decent’ under the government has jumped from 53.2% in 2006 to 76.7% as of 2020.
