Summer is off to a sizzling start, and I’m not just talking about the weather.

Those applying for a mortgage face a lending lottery with lots of weird quirks. Even now, almost two months after tighter lending rules came into effect, more oddities are coming to light.

Apply for a mortgage with HSBC and it will inspect your monthly expenditure so closely that even the monthly £5.99 spent on a Netflix membership could affect your application.

Over at NatWest the boffins don’t take children into account in affordability calculations, which is different from the rest of the market, said Aaron Strutt of mortgage broker Trinity Financial.
