Homebuyers should prepare for a challenging summer as measures designed to cool signs of overheating in the housing market put upward pressure on the cost of borrowing.

Aaron Strutt, of mortgage broker Trinity Financial, says: “Many building societies are offering low deposit mortgages and the Help to Buy scheme has given them the confidence to do it. If the scheme were to be scaled back, it would not be a surprise to see these lenders making it harder to qualify for a mortgage without a family deposit or guarantee.”
